Google added automatic multilingual translations to GTalk, but wait it gets better. Translations are delivered by bots you add to your group chat which means the service is not tied to a particular client but they can be used by any jabber client that can use the gtalk service!

Eg.: to get Italian to English translations add it2en@bot.talk.google.com
