Slashdot | Google Tells Users To Drop IE6

Finally!! It’s since IE 6 came out I was dreaming this day would finally arrive!! :)

Kelly writes “Google is now urging Gmail users to drop Internet Explorer 6 IE6 in favor of Firefox or Chrome. Google recently removed Firefox from the Google Pack bundle, replaced it with Chrome, then added a direct download link for Chrome on Google and YouTube. Google’s decision to list IE6 as an unsupported Gmail browser does not affect just consumers: Tens of thousands of small- and mid-sized businesses that run Google Apps hosted services may dump IE6 as well. What’s especially interesting is the fact that Mozilla is picking up two out of three browser users that Microsoft surrenders.”

    Google Chrome

Finally released… erhm, not yet, but close to!
Take a look at the geekiest application presentation ever: an entire comic book!!

And the question is, do we need another browser? Firefox 3 is pretty cool by itself, and Safari 4 with the new javascript engine and newly released CSS and HTML 5 standard support will probably be even better… ok, ok even IE 8 seems promising. What can I say? Every time a competitor release a new version the bar goes higher and higher, hopefully Google will help making all of this improvements even faster! Now if somebody would take some time to make javascript less ugly … wait, they are!! :)

The only thing it’s a little shady about Chrome is the testing part: Google says they are using their infrastructure to test their release on significant parts of the WWW. Does it mean they will adapt support of the “web standards” to fix non-compliant sites?? Hope not, otherwise what is a “standard” for! ;-)

Almost forgot, did I say Google Chrome is free and completely Open Source?? Well…

should be interesting to see if Chrome works more efficiently than FireFox and IE… if it’s faster than Firefox, since isn’t IE, then i’ll use it

after a little trying it seems pretty fast indeed, and I was testing under a virtual machine with low ram and one CPU only.

It still has some rough edges, e.g. there’s no tab list and the UI is a little too childish for my taste, but I really liked the smart address bar (search quality is not an issue in Google products! :) ) and the fact controls do not steal precious real estate.

I hope the MAC and Linux versions (now in development) are coming out fast! Heard the lead from Camino is working on the MAC version!!

    iCal loves Google Calendar!

Thanks to the flexible wonders of WebDAV, or more specifically, CalDAV, Leopard users can now plug their Google Calendar account (including those run on Google Apps) into iCal via this simple set of instructions straight from the Big G’s Help Center.

    Finally!! :)

    QR Codes, hassle free!!

Apart from post offices I never really understood the need of QR codes, but I have to admit they look cool! :)
If you don’t know what is a qr code what are you waiting for… look it up on wikipedia!!
To lazy? I’ll give you an example:

    QRCode

So the big news is you can now use google chart apis to generate your own without any effort just by typing this in your address bar:
